The 125-year-old Northwestern Settlement (NS), 1400 W. Augusta, and the 181 (approximately) -year-old Chicago Police Department (COD) partnered on Monday.

The partnership was for food deliveries, in the 12th District, to those who would not be able to have much of a holiday celebration this year.

When the 12th District Officers, from the CAPS (Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy) office, arrived in the morning, they were quickly warmed by moving 100 very heavy grocery bags into their vehicles. Filled by volunteers over the weekend, 600 bags of groceries awaited them.

Belna Reyes, who has been overseeing this multi-faceted NS project for 25 years, explained that there was one "wrinkle" in this year's plan. "The chickens haven't arrived and we don't know when they will. They had truck problems because of the weather."

Officer Edwards

Nonetheless, officers began grabbing two bags at a time then found carts on which they could load many more at a time. Officer Ramirez headed this year's efforts and was assisted by Officers Edwards, new 12th District CAPS Officer Barraco and Tamez as well as CAPS Community Organizer Nancy Arroyo.

They loaded as many as they could before starting the deliveries. According to Edwards, they also distributed the chickens after their arrival to the NS location. All the grocery bags and chickens transported by the CPD officers went to specific schools that had identified families in need of these donations.

Belna Reyes explained that the gift baskets came from companies, groups, individuals and many other organizations

The remainder of the grocery bags were to be delivered by others.

Another room was filled with various gift baskets. Those items were to be delivered by various groups while another room was to turn into toy center. Toys loaded with toys that would thrill the kids invited to the event.

Over the last couple of weeks many activities brought people together at the settlement house from around ChicagoLand.

Below is a video that is a window into the many activities at Northwestern Settlement.
