"Opinion's Tangle," by David Reif, ink and pastel 22" W by 15"

With the intent to invite thoughtful exploration of a series of questions, ARC Gallery, 2156 N. Damen Ave., has a call for entries in any medium for a February 28 to March 24, 2018, exhibition, Not Just Drawing: A Line With Intent

"What is habit and convention, and what is not?" is the underlying question that this exhibition is intending to learn.

Within that context ARC is asking…

  • What is the underlying driving purpose or "thought-framework" for making a mark or image on a surface or in a space?
  • Can "intent" include the intention of having no intent?
  • How much does habit, convention or chance dictate our action and how much comes from an original and personal sense of expressed understanding?
  • How much comes from the unconscious or irrational fabric of our experience?
  • Are there other ways to make a line than with a #2 pencil?

Deadline for entries is Jan. 31, 2018. Application forms and the exhibition's prospectus and applications are available online

Three honorary awards including "Best of Show" will be posted in the exhibit and listed on the ARC website.

The Juror will be F. David Reif, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University Wyoming. BFA, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, The Art Institute of Chicago, MFA, Sculpture, Yale University; Associate Professor, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.; Chair and Board, Wyoming Council for the Arts, Visiting Artist: University of Northern Arizona; University of Wisconsin, Madison; University of Michigan; Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, Centenary College of Louisiana; University of Houston, TX., Wayne State University Detroit.
