More than ten organizations in the 1st Ward were represented at a 1st Ward evening meeting on Wed., May 18.   Alderman Proco  "Joe" Moreno is hopeful that the group will be a task force that will work at proactive business development.

In a short intro, Moreno stated the purpose of the group, "The individual groups represented here do a fantastic job of reacting to types of businesses that  are coming into our ward or want to come into the ward. Whether that is positive, negative or neutral. that is a good thing and that is what we want to continue.

"But, as I have said and we have talked about, we need to be proactive in a way that we can reach out to businesses that we see as right sized businesses for the various parts of the ward. Instead of saying what we'd like to see in an area, hopefully this task force will reach out to companies that are good citizens, hopefully local, who meet the demands of the local area and demands of their corporate structures so they can do well."

Moreno also announced that he introduced into the City Council that there be a zoning change to Industrial on Milwaukee Ave. near the Congress Theater along with a liquor moratorium. That was a result of Wal-Mart contacting him about putting a store in that area for which they needed a zoning change which they later came back and said they did not need.  The proposed change would preclude them from being able to come into the area.

The close to two hour coalition building meeting included discussions about community data, how to work together, identifying places in need of development and needs for less bunching of store types as well as how all the communities are blending together. Suzanne Keers who lives in Wicker Park and is the co-founder and current director of Local First Chicago, shared information about how to develop healthy business development in an area.

Tax Incremental Financing (TIF) district locations and how they can impact this type of development along with space availability and filling them were added to the conversation mix along with infra structure and development where zoning can be used to help effect a certain outcome. Education on such subjects as the theory of parking were encouraged. And, it was suggested that tools be found or created that would assist such a group in being effective in their efforts.

It was agreed that what is needed is to get input from community residents and to look at success stories which tell how different businesses have coalesced and why.  Ronda Locke who is now a permanent member of Moreno's staff, is going to pull together a survey to collect information from the community about their needs and wants about businesses in the area.

Organizations represented at the meeting were the three chambers: West Town, Wicker Park/Bucktown and Logan Square; SSA #29; SSA #33; Bucktown Community Organization (BCO); East Village Assn. (EVA); Greater Goethe Neighborhood Assn. (GGNA); Chicago Grand Neighborhood Assn (CGNA); West Bucktown Neighborhood Assn (WBNA);  Wicker Park Committee (WPC); and Local First.

Note: You are encouraged to speak out in the comment area below on this topic. If you want to be included on the list for the survey distribution send us your email.

We need a Gym

Why do all the local gyms get built in west loop or bucktown and further north? We need a decent gym somewhere near wood and Chicago ave. Is it possible? I am certain they would get members in no time ESPECIALLY if there was childcare and or kids' activities!!

Local economy...

Hi, Elaine, Great story... though I am not part of a formal organization, every week since April of 2009, the Wicker Park Bucktown e-newsletter has featured no less than a few dozen local, independently owned businesses in each of our issues, with links to most of the groups represented in this story. We also link to Our Urban Times in every issue, to spread awareness of the stories you cover here at OUT. In order for small businesses to stay strong, amid competition from big box stores like Wal-Mart and Target, they must get the word out twice as much, because it is impossible to compete against corporations that heavily advertise and slash prices. The Pipeline newsletter tries to do its part with featuring exclusively the small businesses that make the 1st Ward shine. latest issue, see link below.. if any of your readers want to sign up for our once weekly email, send email to streetsofwicker@hotmail with header of "subscribe." this summer after two-plus years we are putting together first printed booklet too! May 17th issue: http://tinyurl.com/438h3bo thanks!
