Now is the time to be thinking “Spring” and planning for your 2010 garden. Get out your seed catalogs and go through them. It will make the winter seem less severe.
I order my seeds in January. One tip is to keep some sort of record of your purchases. This will help you to remember what did or did not do well.
You might want to try starting the seeds indoors under grow lights. I suggest that you start in a small way until you get more experience. For the light fittings, I use ordinary four foot fluorescent shop light units. Each unit takes two forty watt tubes. I find that one cool white and one warm white tube in each unit gives good results. Tip: suspend the fittings on chains so you can raise them as the plants grow, Ramses II spielen.
One seed variety you might like to try is Geraniums, these germinate well. I start them in germinating mix or seed starting formula in a small tray. A very cheap source of trays are the Styrofoam trays you get when you buy mushrooms, but be sure you poke some holes in the bottom for drainage.
Keep the soil moist but not flooded and cover the tray with plastic or put it in a plastic bag. As soon as you see signs of growth remove the plastic and put the tray under lights. When the young seedlings have two proper leaves and can be handled, transplant to four inch pots using regular potting soil. I start my geraniums in January.
Transplanting tip: use a screwdriver or small knife to ease the roots out of the tray and handle the seedlings by their leaves. Avoid handling the stem if possible. At this stage, the seedlings are very delicate. If you damage a leaf, it probably will get over it. If you crush the stem, it is a goner!
