Nick Jacobs, the little tricyclist who could!

"What happened to the boy on the tricycle? His little legs were going like crazy." " Did he make it? Is he ok?" "What happened to the boy on the three wheeler?" Were the questions that flew at me a week after the Like Bike Ride and Celebration. All the inquisitors realized his determination but were concerned that maybe he didn't make it.

One questioner explained that a red plastic cup was a barrier to his progress. "He was not about to be stopped so he rode over it. But then one of his tires got stuck on it. He kept going, sliding this cup along! His mother came to his rescue. Picked him up then got the cup off the wheel. He was off again!"

As I was at the front of the ride, I had no idea. I told the concerned inquirers that I would check on it.

Coincidently, Lucy Jacobs and I had a conversation at the Circus in the Park in Holstein later that day. I knew that she was on the ride so I told her about the inqueries and she said, "That was Nick, my son." She went on to tell me that Nick was going to get to Logan Square no matter what.

"But the parade passed us by. We had to get off the street onto the side walk. Nick was not happy about leaving the street but he was still going to get to Logan. There was a very nice couple from St. Mary's who stayed with us as we walked to our destination. The man offered to carry the bike but I think it was easier for Nick to ride. After a few steps, he went back on his bike."

Nick, who is four, his mom and I got together last week to talk about his adventure.

Though at first he proclaimed not to remember, he did start talking about it. He remembered that the Police cars passed them and that he then had to go on the side walk. "I didn't like that! I wanted to ride on the street!"

So next year, let's hope he can do that very thing! Go Nick!
