Tangleweed traced their six year history in music. L to R: Paul Wargaski, Scott Judd, Billy Oh, Kenneth Rainey and Ryan Fisher

Tangleweed's sixth Birthday BBQ featured the "bluegrassish" sounds that make your toes tap while a few "yee ha"s shoot over your lips out into the world.  Then some Texans strode out and let loose with a Shotgun Party that further hog tied the audience in the former Acme Works space at 1741 N. Western.

Tangleweed started the musical celebration with a retrospective of their music from the last six years, ending with a look into the future.  With Ryan Fisher on banjo and Billy Oh doing the fiddling, Kenneth Rainey plucked his mandolin while Scott Judd strummed his guitar and Paul Wargaski bowed and plucked  his suit(case) bass.

Wargaski 's instrument is a solution for all occasions.  One can pack for a trip, play a tune and/or use it for bottle top removal. Spending most of their music-making time behind the lights and mikes of the "stage," the five man group moved in front of the lights to be among their adoring fans for their final numbers.

Shotgun's music matched their attire -- eclectic

After a break, a two women, one man trio from Austin, Texas ambled on stage, taking over the room with their first chord. With an eclectic mix of period pieces (swing, bluegrass, early blues and story telling country), their tight harmony, physically active presence and their at-oneness with the music, each other and the audience captivated all ages.

Shotgun's Jen and Andrew

Songwriter, singer and guitarist Jenny Parrott and Andrew-Austin Peterson groove while Katy takes the lead.

Making her fiddle sing, Katy Rose Cox not only fiddled herself into the hearts of her audience but further engaged them by jumping up on a chair in their midst. Jenny Parrott went from seductress to innocent little country girl as she strummed her guitar and performed rendition after rendition of pieces she wrote. Andrew-Austin Peterson, the newest member of the trio, did not disappoint either with his lead on some numbers.

Tangleweed will be playing the Double Door on May 11 and other locations fairly close by while you'll have to be traveling in Belgium to see Shotgun Party real soon.  You can check their schedule on their website.
