Eight-hour Martin Luther King Day celebration in Wicker Park on Monday!

Martin Luther King's (MLK) passion for nonviolent activism will be in action in the Wicker Park Field House, 1425 N. Damen from 1 to 9 p.m., Mon., Jan. 16, MLK Day. 

It will be eight hours of fun and information, all free of charge, that begins with activities for 12 and under and ends with an intergenerational basketball game pitting teens against adults at 6:30 p.m.

In between at 2:30 there will be performers including  Jesse White Tumblers, Willie Garcia from Orchestra Sabor, Koko Holiday and JazStar as well as Clayton Williams. In addition, a well known list of presenters will include:

  • Congressman Danny K. Davis
  • Secretary of State Jesse White
  • 1st Ward Alderman Proco Moreno
  • Dr. Joseph Day
  • 14th District Police Department
  • Other community leaders

Elimination of violence in Chicago will be the focus from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., of a diverse panel of experts, followed by conversation from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

The panel of seven will be headed by Norman Livingston Kerr, Vice President of UCAN who heads violence intervention and prevention services.

 "People are fed up with the number of homicides and shootings that have occurred. I believe that there are a solutions to violence in Chicago," says Kerr. 

"Monday is an opportunity for people to get involved. I hope that each person leaves the panel and the discussions afterward with a call to action.

 "Even if violence is not happening to or around you, it can affect you. Somebody you work with, or a friend or colleague can have experienced violence. What affects one of us, affects us all." 

"Involvement and sustainability of financial support are the keys to solving the violence."
