Green Music Fest is rooted in green initiatives

The 2nd Annual Green Music Fest is about to be a reality on June 26 & 27 on Chicago Ave. between Ashland and Noble from noon to 10 p.m. each day. The Green Family Fun Fest is between noon and 5 p.m. each day. Local retailers, art and craft vendors, plus a green vendor village will add to the music and beer venues.

A long list of groups will be live on one music stage and a D. J stage will be spinning more sounds until 10 p.m.  Performances by students from the Columbia College Chicago's Center for Community  Art Partnerships will be on the Family Fest Stage from noon until 2 p.m.  while hands on activities in the family area will be happening from noon to 5 p.m. They include recycled arts and crafts, shirt re-fashioning, musical instrument petting zoo, music together demonstrations, glove garden, face painting, dance and drum demonstrations, break-dancing lessons and healthy cooking demonstrations.  There will be a Little Peeps section for kids under three.

it is hard to believe that this fest all started with an idea Robert Gomez of Subterranean and Beat Kitchen had more than a couple of years ago when "green" was generally thought of as a color instead of a way of life.

"I felt that educating the public about Green initiatives and options was an important movement that had trouble getting people to pay attention.  Of course, a lot has changed in our world in the last 2 years but the idea was that if we could combine the Green movement with kick-ass music, then people are more likely to pay attention and maybe learn some things about how to make this a greener city."

He presented the idea to the West Town Chicago Chamber of Commerce and the green initiative was rooted.

The entire event is a product of the West Town Chicago Chamber of Commerce with the support of the City of Chicago Department of Environment's Chicago Center for Green Technology. The Beat Kitchen is a co-sponsor of the Family Fest.
