Rapid Pulse: Performance art rules on Milwaukee Avenue thru June 15

A mix of performance art, videos, artist talks and panel discussions are part of the 3rd Rapid Pulse International Performance Art Festival. It starts on Thurs., June 5, and ends on Sun., June 15, in multiple venues from  1034 N. Noble St. to the Polish Triangle, on Division St. where Milwaukee and Ashland Avenues meet. 

The event kicked off with a talk by Jason Lim, Singapore, in the Society for the Arts, 1112 N. Milwaukee Ave., on June 5. He performs "Duet with Light" on June 6 at 7 p.m. in Electrodes, the store front windows of DEFIBRILLATOR, 1136 N. Milwaukee Ave. 

Other events through the 8th then June 12 through the 15th may be found on their website via date and time. The other venues are Vittum Theatre, 1034 N. Noble St.; Nightingale Cinema, 1084 N. Milwaukee Ave.; and HUB, 1184 N Milwaukee Ave. 

Australia's Matthew Prest is scheduled to perform in the Triangle on Sat.,  June 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. as he runs repeatedly into a 12 by 7 foot wall of scotch tape.

On June 14 at 2 p.m. at the Society for Arts, a panel will discuss "Intimacies: Self-Sacrifice and Preservation."

 Moderated by Yolanda Cesta Cursach, panelists are Jessica Elaine Blinkhorn, Diaz Lewis, Anna Brown, Freya Bjorg Olafson and Teoma Naccarato. 

Scotsman Alastair MacLennan, Emeritus Professor in Fine Art, University of Ulster, Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Teoma Naccarato, from Canada, end the event on June 15. 

The curatorial committee for Rapid Pulse consisted of Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago Curatorial Assistant, Steven Bridges; Curator and Performance Artist, Julie Laffin; MA graduate in Arts History and Administration from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Giana Gambino; and Joseph Ravens. 

Ravens, who is the event producer, is an internationally known performance artist who brought performance art to Milwaukee Ave. in December 2010. Founder and director of DEFIBRILLATOR gallery, he calls the two store front display window areas the Electrodes of Defibrillator and uses every inch of the interior and store front.windows for a myriad of performances by local and international performers 12 months a year at 1136 N. Milwaukee Ave.
