Tangleweed is often seen about town.

Celebrating their sixth birthday, Tangleweed is having a Birthday BBQ on May 1 in the garden and gallery at 1741 N. Western. In addition to barbeque fare there is sure to be a whole lot of fiddlin' and bluegrass from Tangleweed and Shotgun Party.  Rain or shine, doors open at 7 p.m. with music starting at 7:30 p.m.  An RSVP is requested as is a suggested donation of $10.

The five man Tangleweed group, scheduled to be playing at the Double Door on May 11, will be sharing stories from the past and plans for the future at the Saturday night party.

Tangleweed's most current CD.

They began with a traditional bluegrass instrument mix of banjo (Ryan Fisher), bass (Paul Wargaski) and fiddle (Billy Oh)with a mandolin (Kenneth Rainey) and guitar (Scott Judd) and have added to their instrumental mix. They bring in new instrumentation in their new album, "Most Folk Heroes Started Out as Criminals. " The erhu, autoharp, tenor guitar and accordion are some of the additional instruments they use in their expanded repertoire including mountain murder ballads, Irish rebel songs and classic rock.

Worldwide reviews have hailed their work as a "welcome breath of fresh air for lovers of stomping string band music and high lonesome harmonies."
