President Obama declares Cook County a disaster area
As a result of the July 23-24 flash flooding throughout the city and the rest of the county, President Obama declares Cook County a disaster area. All five of the wards (1st, 26th, 27th, 32nd and 35th) covered by Our Urban Times had flooding problems in parts of each ward. FEMA funding is now available.
It is important for everyone with damage from the flooding to take action in order to collect compensation for their damages. Having filled out previous forms has nothing to do with reimbursements thru FEMA. Forms previously submitted regarding flooding damages were to request FEMA to step in.
There are two ways to fill out an application. Either call 800.621.3362 then select 2 or apply online.
This is the information needed to complete the form:
- Social Security number
- Phone number where applicant can be reached
- Current mailing address
- Address and zip code for the damaged property
- Directions to the damaged property
- Private insurance information (if available)
Applicants receive an application number after completing the form. An inspector from FEMA will contact the applicant in a few days to set an appointment to evaluate all damage related to the flood.
FEMA disaster assistance provides grants for repairs, replacement, and other related expenses due to the flood.
