Shoppers get ready: State Sales Tax takes a ten day holiday

Date:
08/05/2010

Shoppers, prepare your shopping bags, get your running shoes on. Purchases of certain items under $100, such as clothing, footwear and school supplies, will have 5% less Illinois state sales tax charged between Aug. 6  thru Aug. 15. School supplies are not subject to the $100 rule. Instead of paying 9.75% on purchases in Chicago, shoppers will pay 4.75%.

If  items are bundled, the sales tax reduction may or may not be given. That is determined by whether or not the bundle has more or less qualifying items.  "The devil in the details" can be explored at a revenue site.  Explanation about bundling is on point 4.

A list of qualifying items for this sales tax reduction can be found at the state revenue site.

Business owners can find more information for how to report sales during this period on the Sales and Use Tax Report
