Waguespack supports Alvarez withdrawal from Laquan McDonald case

Alderman Scott Waguespack

Alderman Scott Waguespack (32 Ward), City Council Progressive Reform Caucus Chair says that Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez's decision to step down from prosecuting the Chicago Police Officer Van Dyke case is the right thing to do.

Alvarez announced today that she is withdrawing and requested a special prosecutor in the Laquan McDonald shooting case.

Her withdrawal "is an important step toward ensuring that justice is done for the family of Laquan McDonald and all the residents of Chicago’s neighborhoods.

"In December, I introduced a resolution calling for the appointment of an independent prosecutor in this case. I will be reaching out to the City Clerk and Rules Committee Chairwoman Michele Harris to let them know I am now withdrawing that resolution,” said Waguespack.

“This is clearly the appropriate decision in this case," said Democratic nominee for Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, who has strongly advocated for the use of independent prosecutors in police-involved shootings.
