RoseAmong the Tuesday events at Cog Hill Golf Course& Country Club last week were The Professional Practice Rounds for the BMW Golf Championship Tournament. Regal white banners bellowing against a vivid blue sky set the tone, welcoming the golf spectators down a pathway of fun and entertainment.

Learning the basic skills in the late 1990s was easier than today. There were only a few basic skills: hitting the wood shots, long irons, medium irons, short irons, and the putt. Now there are more clubs to choose, such as the rescue, hybrid or gap wedge, and tons of shots to make according to all the tour players.

THE Chicago golf story of 2010 played out in February. "In Small Wonders," an article by the golf course architect editor and critic for Golf Digest/ Golf World, Ron Whitten selected The 25 Best Nine-Hole Courses in America. Our nearest course, Sydney R Marovitz, was so honored.  This Chicago Park District landmark is a long 9-hole venue along Lake Michigan east of Lake Shore Drive, just north of Diversey Harbor.  Take the Recreation Drive exit (3700 North) and then a quick right turn toward the lake.
