Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) meetings are sporting a "new look" during August in the 13th District at the direction of Commander Judith Martin.  They are meeting outdoors and doing a police roll call for each meeting.

The roll calls show a police presence and send a message to all about the residents and police working together in the community.  At a recent  Beat 1312 meeting outside Clemente High School at Western and Division, Beat Facilitator Annette Cabral  included a lesson in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) in addition to their regular review of crime reports for the area.

At the beginning of the meeting following the roll call, Commander Martin thanked her officers for their excellent service and encouraged them to take time to be with their families. The officers and staff had an opportunity to socialize before the program commenced and the officers went back out on the streets.

Irving Brown demonstrates life saving techniques

"After I received my CPR certification, I thought it would be a good program for our CAPS meeting.  I asked the instructor if he would do a demonstration at one of our meetings," explains Cabral. Irving Brown, who was Cabral's instructor agreed. He demonstrated several  ways to perform basic life support based on the patient and the problem. Using forms, he demonstrated how to provide life support with and without an AED (automated external defibrillator). Brown is part of Dr. Katherine and Associates, a training organization for hospitals, law enforcement, and anyone interested in first aid and basic life support education.
