National Night Out Celebrations vary in size and complexity not only in Chicago but across the country and in Canada. Chicago's 13th and 14th Districts are perfect examples of this twenty-seven year old event.

At the root of law enforcements National Night Out are four goals: to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; to generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

The 13th Police District had a modestly sized event that went from 5 p.m. to approximately 8 p.m. in Smith Park. Included were spirited and fun events for all ages. CAPS Beat 1313 took advantage of the evening by having their regular meeting outdoors. The 13th's event was one of some 15,000 celebrations in communities in the United States and territories, military bases and Canadian cities.

One of the highlights of the District 13 event was the Jesse White Tumblers. With performances starting in 1959, the Team's founder and coach Jessee White continues as an active leader and coach.  A juvenile delinquency prevention program designed to help "youngsters grow tall and straight." The members are required to abide by White's strict rules, which include staying in school, maintaining a "C" average in academic coursework and staying away from gangs and drugs.

Other activities included 13th District Commander Judith Martin taking an outdoor roll call of police officers; a display of vintage cars; and a give away of merchandise.

Feedback from police personnel, public officials and attendees at the 13th and 14th District events indicates that the 2010 National Night Out was a tremendous success.
