Responding to a call of a "person down," 12th District officers found an Hispanic man with severe head trauma on the sidewalk walk in the doorway of a new condo building in the 1100 block of N. Ashland Ave. at approximately 1:58 a.m., Sun., Dec. 17. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dozens of cans spilled out of a black garbage bag onto the sidewalk next to the man's body which was under a mass of blankets. According to several reports, the scene was covered with blood.

Andrew Holmes, community activist, walked up and down Ashland, Sunday afternoon, handing out fliers asking people about the victim or potential suspects. "The man was tortured," said Holmes, pointing to blood evidence.

He is offering a $1000 reward for information that would lead to an arrest, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Tips may be given anonymously at 800.883.5597.

Described as being 5' 10" tall and between 160 to 180 pounds, his hair and beard were gray. He was believed to be in his 40s or 50s.

Wearing a crucifix, his identity has not been released by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. According to the Medical Examiner's report, the death was a homicide resulting from multiple blunt and sharp force injuries.

A nearby building owner told the Chicago Tribune that the man, who has been living on the streets for about three years, used to live in the former building on the site of the crime. He also said that since being homeless, the victim had been beaten for trespassing, robbed and shot.

According to several people in the area, the victim never bothered anyone, just slept there. He collected cans that he turned in for cash and was periodically given food from people in the area.

Area Central Detectives are investigating, according to the Chicago Police Department.
