Busted: Bucktown neighbors track down and catch one thief and identify a second
Stanley Rzany, 44, from1600 block of west Le Moyne was charged with two misdemeanors
Some Bucktown neighbors tracked down and caught one thief while another found their security cameras showed an accomplice who made the grab in a locked backyard in the 2100 block of west Moffat, Wed., Sept. 11.
Niall Fennessy was working on neighbor Nancy and John West's HVC system. His tool bag was on the sidewalk in the locked backyard where he was working.
In and out of the basement, he realized that his tools were missing. He shouted to Nancy asking her to check her cameras. Niall jumped into his truck to try to search the area.
Seeing his sister, Deirdre Fennessy who lives next door, he tells her what happened. She jumps into her friend Colm Mitchell's car and they head south on Hoyne.
"A guy rode by us on a bicycle. What stuck out in my mind was that he was holding a backpack in the wrong way. It looked heavy and was over his shoulder like a lady would carry her purse. That didn't look right. Then he went down the alley. I am thinking that that definitely does not look right. So I told Colm to stop. I ran down the alley and confronted him," says Deirdre, who is a paramedic and was a bartender for a long time.
Photographing him as she chased him down the alley, she saw him putting the backpack on the correct way. As she caught up with him she began questioning him, "Do you live around here? What is in your backpack?" She further explained, "As I was asking him the questions I put the front wheel of his bike between my knees and my hand on the handle bar."
A neighbor drove in one end of the alley and Colm came in the alley from the other end. Under Deirdre's repeated questioning the suspect stammered, "I found it in the alley. I found it. I found it." She replied, "Well hang on, let's just make some calls here."
She called 911, her brother and her husband. The police arrived and took the suspect in custody.
In the meantime, Nancy West viewed her security camera's video. She sees a man go into the backyard across the alley, checking out the area. Then he checks out the backyard of the house to the west of her house.
Apparently seeing Fennessy's tools he uses a garbage can to assist in jumping over West's pointed-top wooden fence. First checking the garage door then under a back deck, he grabs the tool bag and goes back over the back fence, heading west.
Neighbors found Fennessy's tool bag about a half a block away where the two thieves apparently transferred the tools into the backpack.
The Wests recently attended one of the burglary seminars the Chicago Police Department sponsor where burglars "tell it like it is." They learned that the biggest deterrent to crime, according to the criminals, is "nosy neighbors."
