If water is important to you, then you may want to participate in one of the State Water Plan live discussions, virtually, Dec. 1, 2 or 3. Part of the  Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) the State Water Plan Task Force is in the midst of developing water plan revisions to be completed in December 2021.

“As part of a statewide task force of state agencies and stakeholders, including environmental groups and agriculture organizations, IDNR is leading the effort to review and revise the state’s 40-year-old water plan,” said Colleen Callahan, IDNR Director.

“Members of the task force will gather feedback and answer questions, helping to ensure that the project addresses Illinoisans’ most important water-related needs.”

Participants have a choice of dates to devote approximately two hours. The session begins with a 15 minute intro followed by choosing one of four breakout rooms. Each room addresses specific multiple issues that the Task Force have identified. An approximate 45-minute wrap up session ends the event.

Session attendees may enter and leave breakout sessions at their discretion, thereby being able to attend multiple sessions.

Virtual meeting dates and times are as follows:

• Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m.

• Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m.

• Thursday, Dec. 3 at 5 p.m.

The 13 issues the Task Force has identified for discussion are: water quality, climate change, integrated water management, long term funding, water sustainability, Lake Michigan, flood damage mitigation, aquatic & riparian habitat, Illinois water use laws & regulations, navigation needs & improvements, erosion & sedimentation, data management and recreation.

Links to each meeting, call-in numbers and meeting passcodes, and a recorded presentation outlining the draft water plan can be found online

To be prepared in advance of the meeting, participants are encouraged to review the recorded presentation so they can be prepared to ask questions and make comments.

For those unable to attend any of the sessions, links to meeting recordings will be posted.

Anyone who wishes to provide additional comments and input to the State Water Plan may do so by completing a survey and adding additional comments.

The surveys, available in both English and Spanish and at the State Water Plan Task Force webpage, will be open until Jan. 15, 2021.
