White House Easter Egg Roll included Wicker Park's Webber family and 30,000 others
"It was so cool to be that close to the White House and the event was well planned with several different stations of things for the kids to do," says Wicker Park's Christy Webber about the White House Easter Egg Roll. She and her family were uber enthusiastic about their trip and the event when they left Chicago and possibly a little worse for the wear on their return.
In addition to the egg roll there was "a fitness circuit for the older kids, a farmers market, story tellers, magicians, a stage for yoga, hula hooping, and music, costume characters like Super Why, Peter Rabbit, Cat in the Hat, Dumbo... you name it. However, the characters were huddled under the biggest trees to keep cool, it was that hot and humid! And it was packed to the max with people (some 30,000)...hot, tired, agitated people!!!
"If you ask Oliver, he would give it Super Why high five. That's it. Got to love a three year-old, " said Webber about her son. "Sadly the first group got to the White House garden late, which in turn delayed our group by three hours. Now this wouldn't have been too bad but for security reasons they took all of our drinks, food and sunscreen. The only thing offered was power drinks, juice boxes, water and power bars. This does not satisfy a one year-old nor any of the children that waited in the ropes in 80 degree weather! Many gave up and went home, thank God they let us take our umbrella. However a senior citizen was over heating, so I gave it to her as we waited and waited and waited. Sadly we couldn't really sit in the lines as a huge thunderstorm the night before made the turf soggy and wet and muddy (didn't stop our kids from getting absolutely trashed before we arrived at the White House).
"By the time we got inside, nerves were frayed, Jen's and mine as parents and our kids, little Teddy (the one-year old) fell asleep and saw nothing. Oliver was so tired and hot and sunburned in areas we missed, (remember they took our sunscreen) that to even get him to come out of the stroller was a miracle. Finally after huge drama, he got out and ran around."
Christy gives advice to future White House Easter Egg Roll goers, "Make sure you have a hook up early on and get in the VIP line, it moved and you were in a flash."
