Panel Discussion: Why Us?

in
Thursday, March 17, 2011 - 6:00pm
Of all the great American cities, why did Chicago become the site of a special fascination with the art of self-taught, intuitive and non-academic artists? Chicago has many local artists, collectors, curators, and gallery owners who for generations have been sympathetic to outsider, naïve and folk art. What might this tell us? This panel discussion will tell us all. Panelists include Lynne Warren (Curator at Museum of Contemporary Art), Russell Bowman (Principal at Russell Bowman Art Advisory), and Monica Westin (Contributing Arts Writer at The Huffington Post).

Johalla Projects: Art Opening Reception

in
Friday, February 11, 2011 - 7:00pm - 11:00pm

Ryan Duggan, Feb. 11- Feb. 25, 2011 Ryan Duggan is an artist living and working in Chicago. His work spans a number of mediums, but shares a common tonality. Each piece is a glimpse into his process, never telling the full story, but giving the viewer just enough of the narrative to work with. Negativity, humor, and honesty are used alongside themes such as death, memory, social hierarchy, and religion. Presenting the ephemera of daily life in combination with the slick language of advertising and signage, Duggan's work creates a feeling that is both familiar and uncomfortable.

Intuit: Bundling Against the Cold: Fabric Sculpture Workshop

in
Saturday, February 19, 2011 - 1:00pm
Art has the power to transform adversity into extraordinary artistic vision. In this workshop, led by Lindsay Obermeyer, we will learn how our dreams for a better future can be realized through art-making by selecting something from our personal experiences that we would like to change. These experiences can be extrapolated from personal or public histories. Writing them on pebbles, we'll use bottle caps, yarn and fabric to wrap these dreams and create various patterns that are personally meaningful.
