Damen, Elston Fullerton intersection improvement project inches forward again

Proposed intersection shows Damen running north and south and Fullerton east and west. Elston curves.

An ordinance was introduced to City Council on Wed., Apr. 10, for the Mayor to purchase the land at Damen, Fullerton and Elston Avenues needed to make the new interchange possible. This inches the project closer to a start date probably no sooner than fall of 2014, according to Paul Sajovec, Chief of Staff for 32nd Ward Alderman Scott Waguespack. The ordinance should be passed at council's May meeting.

With 70,000 cars passing through that intersection each day, anyone attempting to traverse the area knows it can take way more time than the reported 7-minutes at certain times of the day and day of the week. But, it will be no sooner than 2015 before that experience gets any better.

The project is a collaborative effort between the Chicago Dept. of Transportation (CDOT), the Illinois Dept. of Transportation (IDOT) and project engineering design consultant Alfred Benesch & Company who worked in close coordination with the Waguespack's office.

The estimated project cost is upwards of $32 million coming from Tax Increment Financing (TIF) and Federal Highway funds.

Though the project was begun before Waguespack took office in 2007, he has made its forward motion a priority.
