32nd Ward Alderman Scott Waguespack removes sewer cover to clean street debris away.

"One of the drains had two to three foot long roots growing in it," explained 32ndWard Alderman Scott Waguespack.   "I want to make sure we don't have the flooding problems this spring that we had last year when we found out that the drains had not been cleaned for about five years."

Waguespack and a former Water Department employee, who he has hired to do the Water Department's work, are going throughout the ward flushing as many sewer drains as they can.  Their approach is to open the hydrants that they can if it is near a drain.  Pulling the grate covers off, they  open the hydrants, sweeping the debris down the sewers.

Some of the hydrabnt covers cannot be removed and some that can are too far from the drains for a successful cleaning. With cars parked, it is not possible to clean the gutters, permitting the water to flush the debris to the sewer.

Editor's note:

Denise Browning get's the reward for OUTing the April Fools' gotcha! For those who missed it...Waguespack is Alderman in the 32nd Ward not the 1st Ward!
