Alderman Scott Waguespack, 32nd Ward and Alderman Robert Fioretti, 2nd Ward, are among the 8 honorees for Best Aldermanic Voting Awards at the upcoming Jan. 28 Independent Voters of Illinois and Independent Precinct Organization (IVI-IPO) event. The other aldermen are John Arena, 45th Ward; Ricardo Munoz, 22nd; Brendan Reilly, 42nd; Toni Foulkes, 15th; Nicholas Sposato, 36th; and Leslie Hairston, 5th.

In addition, both Waguespack and Fioretti are being recognized for their support of the Chicago Public School Teachers and the Chicago Teachers Union during the 2012 Strike.  Arena, Foulkes, Hairston, Munoz, Sawyer and Sposato are also being recognized.

Four aldermen are also being saluted for implementing Community Based Budgeting in their wards. They are Arena, Cappleman, Hairston and Moore.

"It is nice that they give honors mid-way in our terms. A lot of people are looking for more aldermen to meet the challenges in moving the city forward by continuing to work to foster more democratic processes in Council," says Waguespack.

"Transparency is a word used a lot these days. It should mean having meetings and discussions then moving forward based on that input. It should not mean going forward ignoring everything that has been discussed and suggested. IVI-IPO's recognition of these progressive beliefs and actions in encouraging good open government is appreciated."

Fioretti comments, "I appreciate being recognized by IVI-IPO an invaluable institution of progressivism and independent politics in Chicago. I look forward to many more years of working alongside IVI-IPO toward meaningful change here in our city."

The event will be in the Pegasus Restaurant, 130 S. Halsted St., beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online.

Begun in 1944, the IVI merged in 1979 with the Independent Precinct Organizations, founded by Dick Simpson. According to their own description, they are…"dedicated to good government activism and an idealistic vision of open, honest government in Illinois through pragmatic means that confront cynicism and corruption with equal force."

The IVI-IPO's Mission is "to achieve social justice through good government by increasing voter participation and knowledge, by providing a framework for candidate evaluation, and by electing responsive government officials."

"IVI-IPO applauds elected officials who vote for progressive measures in the public interest."
