Avid organizer and promoter for the Logan Square Dog Park, Sally Hamann announced at Pints for Pups in Quenchers, 2401 N. Western Ave., on Sat., Aug. 10, that "I have gone 10 days without smoking and I am going to take the money I would have spent on cigarettes for the rest of the year and give it to the Park."

Having averaged 10-15 cigarettes a day, she followed a schedule that reduced her consumption in July down to one a day. A smoker, on and off since college, Sally, who has not had a puff since July 31, wrote a check for $1,000 to the Logan Square Park funding efforts to reaffirm her efforts. So impressed with her effort, Proco "Joe" Moreno, 1st Ward Alderman, stated he will match her donation!

A determined group of three dog park advocates began efforts to make Park No. 556, 2529 W Logan Blvd. into a dog friendly area starting in November 2010.

Located between Western Ave. and Logan Blvd., the Chicago Park District requires them to have $445,775 to put in new fences with an interim area that opens into a gravel space for the dog park and all the other infrastructure and amenities for the entire park.

Despite the valiant work of the mighty Nacho to garner first prize of $500,000 in the Beneful 2012 contest, their goal is yet to be reached.

BRunft

Brian Runft was another raffle winner

Their efforts prior to Saturday resulted in money from Open Space Impact Fees (OSIF) for $340,00 and donations of approximately $25,000 and pledges of another $30,000, putting them with approximately $50,775 to raise.

All smokers are encouraged to follow Sally's healthy choice and donate the money they'll save to the Logan Square Park. Be sure to let Our Urban Times know about this and you too will be honored in our publication!
