Mindy Segal on-air live with CBS's Vince Gerasole in HotChocolate

Mindy Segal gives Vince Gerasole a lesson on tapping the finishing touches onto a pastry

In the HotChocolate kitchen, 1747 N. Damen, Mindy Segal, owner, was giving CBS's Vince Gerasole pastry decorating tips on air before 7 a.m. on Wednesday in Wicker Park/Bucktown.

Segal, recipient of the coveted James Beard Award for Outstanding Pastry Chef this last summer, and Gerasole talked about a variety of foods during multiple segments of the early morning CBS News Show.

While delectable desserts were the main focus, Segal told Gerasole that  the potato latkes she serves in her popular restaurant are from her mother's recipe. (Latkes are fried potato pancakes particularly popular during the eight-day Jewish festival of Hanukkah but are popular during all seasons in Poland, Germany, Russia, Ukraine and the Czech Republic.)

The segment ended with three drinks. "If you've had enough chocolate you might want to have hot-buttered rum," said Segal. "The other two are layered. They have hot chocolate, espresso and spirits."

HotChocolate will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, but on New Year's Day they will be having their pajama brunch. "It is going to be particularly nice this year," Segal said.
