Neighbors and Engine 43 save building from damage in Bucktown

Fire leaps up the building's backwall

Firemen moved the dumpster down the alley

Flames were licking their way from under the lid of a dumpster and eventually along the backwall of a Western Ave. building just north of Belden Ave. in Bucktown, Monday evening after 8:30 p.m., when a neighbor stopped and called 911.

Smoke filled the alley as they doused the fire

A couple walking down the street also stopped and called 911.

Engine 43 from Battalion 12's Fire Station, 2179 N. Stave St., near California, responded.

Wheeling the container away from the building where the backwall bricks continued to steam, they doused the fire as plumes of smoke billowed toward the night sky.

Thanks to the vigilance of neighbors and the quick response of the Fire Department, a more serious situation was avoided.

According to some residents in the area, they indicate there appears to be a rash of such events.

A 14th Police District spokesperson, found no recent reports of garbage can fires in Beat 1431 and only one in 1432 on June 10.
