"Chicago police are conducting a death investigation after a long-time 1st Ward political operative was found shot to death Sunday inside a van plastered with the signage of Chicago Alderman Proco "Joe" Moreno. Suicide is suspected," said a story in CWB Chicago, Monday morning, May 15.

The death is that of Joseph Muntaner, 63, of the 3000 N. block of Ashland Ave.

It was 4:15 p.m. when someone heard a gunshot coming from a van at 2740 N. Lakeview, near the Elks National Memorial. The park was filled with Mother's Day celebrants and others enjoying a beautiful sunny day.

"The 1st Ward family is very saddened to learn about the passing of Joseph Muntaner. Joe, as he was affectionately known, was for many years a dedicated and loyal member of the 1st Ward political organization.

"He also was a tireless volunteer who dedicated countless hours doing the unglamorous work of picking up garbage, removing graffiti, shoveling snow and helping any ward resident who needed assistance," says a statement from Moreno's office.

"His unrelenting service helped make the 1st Ward a better place. Joe will be sorely missed. We deeply grieve this loss and extend our sincerest condolences out to Mr. Muntaner’s family."

"I met him six years ago at a community event. He worked with me ever since," says Moreno. "Joe Muntaner was like a second brother to me. His dedication to his family and the 1st Ward will be missed infinitely. Now is the time to concentrate on being with his family."

"The recent death of a close family member affected Joe more than any of us knew," says Raymond Valadez," 1st Ward Chief of Staff. "This is such a shock, and it is a heartbreaking loss."

"He was just here a couple of weeks ago, cleaning the street from a tree problem. I am shocked," said Joe Kopera, local resident. "Even when we had differences, we talked them out."

Further information about the incident or arrangements are not available at this time.
