Smith Park celebrates a year of senior programming

David Ramos, Joe Gloriso and Daniel Hernandez (L) are with senior citizens and their families

Known for its iconic World War II Army Tank, outdoor swimming pool, baseball programs and many other activities, Smith Park, 2526 W Grand Ave., has added another program to support the community, "Senior Citizen Day."

Starting the program was one of the first actions of the new Park Supervisor Daniel Hernandez who succeeded East Coast-bound Travis Bogle, last spring.

"Our Smith Park Advisory Council (SPAC) President David Ramos said that he wanted to honor seniors in the community. He felt that they have paid their dues and we should support programming for them," explained Hernandez.

Seniors from all across the community meet every Thursday to enjoy the many amenities Smith Park has to offer, including; outdoor swimming, aerobics, movies and bingo. According to Hernandez, the program has been very successful with approximately 30 seniors visiting the Park regularly.

"I am very pleased with the program, and I have to thank Supervisor Hernandez for following through to make the Park a 'home away from home' for the seniors," said Ramos.

To end their first year of the program, SPAC and community member Joe Glorioso sponsored a luncheon for all the senior citizens at Smith Park. SPAC sponsored gift certificates for the bingo winners, while Glorioso donated all the food. They thanked all the seniors and family members who attended for choosing Smith Park as their place to visit.
